About the role

We are looking for a Story Editor for our hit series What If! As a Story Editor you will suss out ideas, brainstorm relevant content, and distill notes down into cogent loglines and pitches as needed for all our current and future web-series. This role is the most important part of our collaborative brainstorming journey, you will take an idea and turn it into a fully fleshed-out idea that aligns with the vision of each web series. To execute on this deliverable, you will work cross-functionally with the team of Researchers, Showrunners and Senior Management team to turn ideas into stories that will capture our millions of viewers. You will stay informed and up to date on trending topics and advocate for these ideas before they “break” the internet.

Duties and responsibilities
  • Find and pitch story ideas for What If. This process involves:
    • Filtering through the ideas submitted by our fans and other people in the company
    • Coming up with ideas yourself (both evergreen and trending ideas)
  • Developing stories by doing pre-search and writing outlines.
  • Closely following social media trends across different platforms.
  • Understanding what ideas work for the show on different platforms.
  • Attend data and ideation meetings with the Showrunner.
  • Work collaboratively with our Content Acquisition team to find content/footage that aligns with the ideas being brought forward.
  • Meet with members of our team to gain an understanding of our audience demographics for the various social media platforms and finding ideas that meet that subject matter.
  • Understanding the limitations of each social media platform – what works/what does not as it relates to policy guidelines.
  • Understand what we have done in the past and come up with ideas that are out of the box.
  • Collaborate with team members from the Data and Publishing department to define performance metrics for your work.
  • Understand the production workflow required to bring the idea to life.
  • Be a brand ambassador at the end of the day – don’t look at each pitch as an idea but relate the idea to the show concept.
Qualifications you bring
  • You’re subscribed to channels like Vsauce, Mark Rober and Veritasium.
  • You hang out on Quora, StackExchange and Reddit for story inspiration.
  • You spend hours scrolling Twitter and Instagram. You’re constantly checking the YouTube trending page to see what’s going on.
  • You don’t just watch Snapchat and TikTok, you study them to see what other people are watching and why.
  • You pitch stories, not topics.
  • You understand what makes a good video online.
  • You know how to be original. You know what else has been done on this subject and you can explain how your angle is fresh. You explore the applicable science and consequences.
  • You know why our audience would be interested in your story.
  • You source reliable information to support your pitches.
  • You know how to write simple but focused outlines and give direction to the stories you pitch.
  • You are a team player and possess a collaborative team spirit. We don’t do what we do without our team.
